Dear Richard,
I tried to log into our old Photobucket account today. Do you even remember that? We dumped all those blurry digital camera photos there in 2008. The trip to the lake. The Halloween party. The picture of you asleep with the cat.
I typed in the password I’ve used for everything for twenty years.
Incorrect Password.
I tried your birthday. Incorrect Password.
I tried the name of the street we lived on. Incorrect Password.
I sat there staring at the screen, panic rising in my throat. I know the smell of your neck. I know the sound of your laugh. But I have forgotten the combination to the vault where I kept the proof.
The system locked me out after five tries.
I feel like the door just slammed shut on a room I can never enter again. You are slowly becoming pixels that I can't decode.
